Ujjain: In a dramatic late-night decision, the Madhya Pradesh government has withdrawn the proposed land pooling plan for the upcoming mega spiritual township being developed for the Simhastha event in Ujjain. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced the reversal shortly after holding a crucial meeting with the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, BJP leaders, and local representatives.
This decision comes at a time when thousands of farmers were preparing to march to Ujjain, triggering serious concerns for law and order. Highly placed sources confirm that alarming intelligence reports played a major role in the government’s sudden U-turn.
What Angered the Farmers
The land pooling project proposed the acquisition of 2,378 hectares of land spread across 17 villages, affecting nearly 1,800 landowners. Farmers were outraged over the idea of permanent acquisition, insisting that—as per decades-old practice—land used during the Kumbh Mela should be taken only temporarily and returned after the event.
They argued that permanent takeover would destroy livelihoods and disrupt rural economies.
Celebrations After the Reversal
Once the announcement of cancellation spread, farmers from Ujjain, Alirajpur, Jhabua, and several western Madhya Pradesh districts reached the city in large numbers. Streets echoed with drums, dancing, and distribution of sweets, marking a rare victory for the farming community.
The government also clarified that the temporary township for Simhastha would now be constructed at an alternate location.
Direct Instructions From the Centre
Sources say the Centre intervened after receiving reports of escalating tensions. A delegation of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh was summoned to Bhopal for a late-night meeting at the CM House. Senior BJP officials, Ujjain’s public representatives, and district officials attended the meeting.
Following discussions, CM Mohan Yadav instructed the Urban Administration and district authorities to immediately cancel all land acquisition orders.
Intelligence Reports Forced a Change of Mind
According to insider information, intelligence agencies warned that the aggressive mood among farmers and the scale of mobilisation could result in major unrest in Ujjain on November 18, the day of the planned protest.
The reports indicated that the protest might spiral beyond control, posing serious risk during the preparation phase of the world-class Simhastha 2028 project.
To prevent disorder and potential clashes, the government decided to withdraw the land pooling plan without delay.
Protest Called Off
After the announcement, the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh cancelled the large-scale protest scheduled for November 18. Instead, farmers will now hold a small symbolic rally as a mark of their demands being accepted.
