New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament has concluded, but the debate over rising pollution in Delhi and across India dominated political discourse even after the session ended. During the session, the Congress party demanded discussions on pollution, but the government claimed that disruptions caused by Congress prevented such debate. Congress has strongly rejected this claim.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Expresses Regret
Speaking at the conclusion of the session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed regret that discussions on pollution could not take place. “We were fully prepared for a full-day discussion on pollution, as demanded by the opposition,” Rijiju said. “However, the Congress party incited other members, creating chaos in the House and disrupting proceedings.”
Jairam Ramesh Hits Back
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh sharply criticized the government, saying, “This was not a Winter Session, it was a Pollution Session.” Ramesh expressed shock at the government’s assertion in Parliament that there is no connection between pollution and lung-related health issues. He emphasized that Congress had repeatedly sought a detailed debate in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, but unfortunately, the Lok Sabha session was adjourned indefinitely.
Ramesh firmly rejected the government’s claim that Congress was responsible for the failure to discuss pollution, stating, “This allegation is completely false and unacceptable.”
The session highlighted the growing tensions between Congress and BJP over environmental issues, with pollution emerging as a key point of contention in national politics.
