Tejashwi Yadav’s Premature Claim Highlights the Perils of Overconfidence in Elections

Bhopal: Bihar’s 2025 Assembly elections may witness a major political upset. As current trends indicate, the NDA is emerging as the single largest party, leaving the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its Mahagathbandhan allies trailing. Experts suggest that Tejashwi Yadav may now have to wait another five years for a chance to become Chief Minister.

Repeating Nakulnath’s Mistake
Elections always bring a surge of excitement in Indian politics, whether in a metropolitan center or a remote constituency. Some leaders work diligently on the ground, while others rely on grand speeches and media presence to shape public perception. Many overconfident politicians declare victory prematurely, assuming the electorate has already crowned them.

The Burden of Boastfulness
Flashing smiles, confident eyes, and over-the-top claims from podiums—leaders often assert that public support is overwhelming and the opposition was insignificant. Yet, the beauty of democracy is that it flows according to its own rules, not according to anyone’s assumptions. When the EVMs are opened, such preemptive claims often turn into viral memes on social media.

Bihar Election Embarrassment
Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav, nearly four days before the results, had declared that the Mahagathbandhan would form the government in Bihar and that he would take oath as Chief Minister on 18 November. He alleged that the NDA was using every possible trick, including assistance from the Election Commission and central police forces. Despite these claims, the NDA appears set to win.

Other Leaders Caught in Overconfidence
This is not unique to Tejashwi. Earlier, his party strategist Sanjay Yadav had publicly discussed the guest list for the swearing-in ceremony on live TV. Even prominent political strategist Prashant Kishor, who worked tirelessly in Bihar for months, fell victim to overconfidence, with his statements now circulating as memes online.

History Repeats: Nakulnath in 2023
This phenomenon is not new. In the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, the Congress party prematurely declared Kamal Nath’s son, Nakulnath, as Chief Minister. Nakulnath invited the public to his father’s swearing-in ceremony and assured voters that their jobs and rights were secure, all before results were announced. When the actual results emerged, these statements backfired.

The Silence of Defeat is Heavy
Often, leaders mistake the crowd at rallies as a reflection of voter sentiment, and the glare of cameras as genuine support. They build a narrative that carries them aloft—until trends and results bring them crashing down. Statements made in the euphoria of assumed victory weigh heavily in the quiet of defeat. Be it Nakulnath, Tejashwi Yadav, or Prashant Kishor, the lesson is clear: elections are unpredictable, thrilling, and humbling. Confidence is essential, but overconfidence can make leaders prisoners of their own words.
