Tejashwi Yadav’s “Operation Clean” and the 2026 Panchayat Elections: A Blueprint for the Next Five Years

After returning from his Europe tour, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav is set to launch what insiders are calling “Operation Clean”, a comprehensive organizational overhaul aimed at strengthening the party and preparing for Bihar’s upcoming elections. Political observers say this initiative could define the RJD’s strategy for the next five years.

Sending a Message of Family Unity

A primary focus for Tejashwi will be projecting family unity. Analysts believe the disunity within the RJD during the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections was a key reason behind the party’s defeat. During the campaign, the NDA repeatedly highlighted the internal discord, asking voters whether a party that cannot manage its own household could be trusted with the state. Recently, hints of reconciliation appeared when Tej Pratap Yadav celebrated his birthday with mother Rabri Devi, signaling a return of confidence within the family.

Revamping the Party Structure

On his return, Tejashwi is expected to meet state-level office bearers to strategize the party’s roadmap. This includes revitalizing the RJD’s organizational machinery from the state down to panchayat level. Political insiders suggest that key leadership changes are imminent, including the possible removal of Mangal Lal Mandal from the state president position, a move intended to restore voter confidence, especially among upper-caste voters who drifted away in the last election.

The focus will be on districts and blocks where the RJD suffered unexpected losses, aiming to build a robust, efficient party network capable of contesting elections effectively.

Addressing Internal Betrayal

One of the party’s greatest challenges remains internal betrayal. Tejashwi reportedly used his time in Europe to review detailed reports on party members whose actions contributed to electoral defeats. Those found guilty of undermining the party could face severe disciplinary action under the umbrella of “Operation Clean,” reinforcing accountability and loyalty within the ranks.

Panchayat Elections as a Testing Ground

The upcoming 2026 Bihar Panchayat elections will be a litmus test for the RJD’s reorganization. While panchayat elections are officially non-party, candidates are often aligned with either the NDA or the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance). Tejashwi plans to leverage these elections to strengthen caste and social alignments across districts, setting the stage for broader state-level contests.

Post-Makar Sankranti Outreach

Sources indicate that after Makar Sankranti, Tejashwi Yadav will embark on a statewide tour, visiting multiple regions to consolidate support. District-wise itineraries will be prepared, listing RJD leaders accompanying him, before final approval by Tejashwi. Once the plan is finalized, the party will roll out its comprehensive organizational revival campaign, marking a strategic reset for the RJD ahead of the next electoral cycle.
