Hyderabad / New Delhi: The Supreme Court has taken a strict stance against the Telangana Assembly Speaker for ignoring its earlier orders regarding the disqualification of BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) legislators. A bench led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai described the Speaker’s conduct as “blatant contempt” and issued a contempt notice.
During the hearing on a contempt petition filed by BRS leader KTR, CJI Gavai remarked pointedly that the Speaker should decide for himself “where he wants to celebrate the New Year” while emphasizing that a decision on the disqualification of the MLAs must be taken within the next week, failing which the Speaker should be ready to face contempt proceedings.
Background of the Case
The case concerns 10 BRS legislators who joined the Congress, raising questions about their continued membership in the Assembly. On July 31, 2025, a Supreme Court bench led by CJI Gavai had directed the Assembly Speaker to decide on the disqualification of these MLAs within three months. However, the Speaker, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, appointed on December 14, 2023, has delayed the decision and even filed a request to extend the deadline.
The Supreme Court’s bench pointed out that the Speaker does not enjoy any constitutional protection in such matters and must comply with the earlier orders. The contempt notice has been issued to hold the Speaker accountable for non-compliance.
This move comes ahead of the CJI’s retirement on November 24, 2025, and marks one of his sternest interventions in ensuring timely enforcement of Assembly disqualification orders.
The Telangana Speaker has yet to respond to the Supreme Court’s notice.
