Supporters Expected Fireworks, But Shinde Chose Restraint: What He Said on the Shiv Sena–BJP Battle in Malvan

BJP vs Shiv Sena in Malvan: The political heat in Sindhudurg’s Malvan Municipal Council has intensified after a sensational ‘cash-for-votes’ sting by Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Nilesh Rane. With the BJP and Shiv Sena fielding rival candidates, the contest has turned into a prestige battle ahead of the first phase of Maharashtra’s local body elections. On Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde held rallies in Malvan to campaign for his party’s candidates, with Nilesh Rane present on stage.

Shinde Avoids Escalation, Stays Away from the Controversy

Despite expectations of a fiery attack, Shinde chose not to escalate tensions between the Shiv Sena and the BJP. Many supporters believed he would openly criticise the BJP following Rane’s sting—which allegedly exposed cash kept at a BJP leader’s residence and was followed by an FIR against Rane himself.
However, Shinde refrained from making any explosive remarks, consciously avoiding adding fuel to the already heated political confrontation.

“If There’s a Blast, Nilesh Rane Will Make It”—Shinde’s Indirect Swipe

Shinde made no direct reference to the cash-for-votes controversy but stood firmly behind Nilesh Rane. Taking an indirect jab at opponents, he remarked, “This area may belong to anyone, but if there’s any blast, it will be made by Nilesh Rane.”
Last week, Rane had accused local BJP leadership—including Maharashtra BJP chief Ravindra Chavan—of using cash to influence voters. Shinde, during his speech, shifted focus towards development, stating that Malvan has immense potential for tourism and infrastructure growth. He added that his government is committed to improving facilities in this coastal region.

FIR Lodged Against Nilesh Rane

An FIR has been registered against Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) MLA Nilesh Rane for conducting the sting at a BJP worker’s home. Rane has been booked for trespassing and entering a private residence without permission.
Reacting strongly, Rane claimed the FIR was lodged at the behest of BJP state leaders Chandrashekhar Bawankule and Ravindra Chavan. He maintained that he was not afraid and stood by his sting operation, calling it “solid proof of voter bribery.” Rane alleged he possesses more evidence, including call recordings, and said he would reveal them “if required.”

Meanwhile, the BJP has dismissed the sting as fabricated, accusing Rane of staging a political drama by illegally entering a private home.
Malvan Municipal Council, which has 19 seats, will go to polls on 2 December.
