
Mumbai: Sunetra Ajit Pawar, affectionately called Vahini, is poised to take oath as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, succeeding her late husband Ajit Pawar, who tragically died in a plane crash near Baramati on 28 January 2026. She will become the first woman Deputy CM of the state, marking a new chapter in Maharashtra politics.
Political Journey
Sunetra Pawar entered politics in 2024, contesting the Baramati Lok Sabha seat against her sister-in-law, Supriya Sule, but lost by over 1.5 lakh votes. Later, on 18 June 2024, she was unopposedly elected to the Rajya Sabha. Following Ajit Pawar’s demise, she is expected to contest the Baramati Assembly seat in the upcoming bypolls.
Wealth and Assets
According to her affidavit submitted in 2024, Sunetra Pawar’s net worth exceeds that of Ajit Pawar, amounting to over ₹150 crore. Her assets include:
- Cash & Bank Deposits: Around ₹3 lakh in cash and approximately ₹6 crore across multiple bank accounts (government, cooperative, and private banks).
- Bonds & Shares: Over ₹66 lakh in bonds and company shares.
- Loans Given: Sunetra has provided loans totaling more than ₹12 crore to family members, including Ajit Pawar, Parth Pawar, Jai Pawar, Pratibha Pawar, and Supriya Sule.
- Vehicles: Assets include cars worth about ₹1 crore, three tractors, and vehicles from brands such as Toyota, Mahindra, and Tata. Her tractors are mainly used for agricultural purposes.
- Gold & Silver: Sunetra owns approximately 1,030 grams of gold and silver assets including 35 kg of utensils, 21.5 kg of silver idols, and 20 kg of silver gift items, with a combined value exceeding ₹2 crore.
- Real Estate: She holds properties across Mumbai, Pune, and Baramati, including agricultural land, residential houses, plots, and commercial buildings, with a total valuation of over ₹100 crore.
Leadership and Social Work
Since 2006, Sunetra Pawar has served as Chairperson of Baramati High-Tech Textile Park Ltd., providing employment to over 15,000 women, primarily from rural areas, and promoting women’s empowerment and skill development. She is also a trustee of Vidya Pratishthan, overseeing education for more than 25,000 students. In 2010, she founded the Environmental Forum of India, transforming Ketwadi village into the country’s first eco-village.
With her vast political, social, and economic influence, Sunetra Pawar is set to emerge as a key figure in Maharashtra’s governance while continuing her commitment to social development and empowerment.
