SP Supports BJP Brahmin MLAs’ Meeting, Questions Democracy; BJP Expresses Concern

Lucknow, UP: The recent meeting of Brahmin MLAs in Uttar Pradesh has sparked political debate between the ruling BJP and the opposition Samajwadi Party (SP), highlighting growing tensions over caste and political strategy.

While BJP state president Pankaj Chaudhary issued a stern warning to party leaders, SP leader and Leader of Opposition Mata Prasad Pandey openly supported the meeting, emphasizing the democratic right of legislators to gather and deliberate.

Opposition Leader Defends Meeting

Speaking on Friday, Mata Prasad Pandey stated that Brahmin MLAs have every right to hold a meeting. “There is nothing illegal or objectionable in this. When members of any community come together to discuss issues affecting them, labeling it as a crime undermines democratic values,” he said.

Pandey added that the Brahmin community has historically played a key role in shaping politics, governance, and social structures in both the state and the country. He accused the BJP of being fearful that discontent among Brahmins could destabilize the government, and claimed that the party is exerting undue pressure on the community’s leaders.

“The BJP’s politics has shifted from dialogue to control and fear. Whenever a group raises its voice about rights, respect, or participation, attempts are made to suppress it. Turning the Brahmin MLAs’ meeting into a controversy is part of this strategy,” Pandey remarked.

BJP Reacts

The BJP, however, has expressed displeasure over the gathering. State president Pankaj Chaudhary warned party leaders to avoid such activities and clarified that the BJP does not engage in politics based on caste or community. “Any leader found indulging in negative politics will face strict action,” he said.

Chaudhary emphasized that the BJP focuses on development and nationalism, contrasting it with opposition parties like the SP, BSP, and Congress, which he accused of clinging to caste-based politics. “As the political landscape changes, parties relying on caste identity will face an uncertain future. In their desperation, they are blindly attacking the BJP,” he added.
