Shocking Statement by MP Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya on Rape Sparks Outrage

Datia, Madhya Pradesh, January 17, 2026: Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya from Bhind has once again stirred political controversy in Madhya Pradesh with a highly disturbing statement linking rape to caste and religion. Baraiya claimed that women from Dalit, Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities are targeted because committing rape against them is considered “meritorious” according to certain ancient texts.

The Controversial Remarks
In a media interview, Baraiya, who himself comes from the Dalit community and is a father of two daughters, made the shocking claims. He stated, “In India, the majority of rape victims belong to SC, ST, and OBC communities. Some ancient scriptures suggest that raping women from these communities brings spiritual merit, equivalent to performing a pilgrimage. This crime is often committed by groups and stems from a distorted mindset.”

Baraiya further alleged that even if women from these communities are not considered conventionally attractive, they are still subjected to sexual violence because the scriptures supposedly mandate it. He made the appalling claim that perpetrators commit such acts at home or in secrecy to “earn rewards” prescribed in these texts, and used extremely graphic examples, including sexual violence against minors.

Political and Social Backlash
The statement immediately provoked widespread condemnation. Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jeetu Patwari distanced the party from Baraiya’s remarks, stating, “No act of rape can ever be justified. Anyone who commits rape is a criminal. It cannot be linked to caste or religion. Sexual violence is a serious crime, and any attempt to rationalize it is unacceptable.”

Baraiya’s comments have ignited outrage across political parties, social organizations, and civil society, with demands for strict action and public accountability.
