Shiv Sena Candidate Haji Salim Qureshi Stabbed During Mumbai Rally; Police Hunt Suspects Using CCTV Footage

Mumbai: A shocking attack occurred on Wednesday when Shiv Sena candidate Haji Salim Qureshi, aligned with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s faction, was allegedly stabbed during a rally in Sant Dnyaneshwar Nagar, Bandra (East). Qureshi sustained injuries to his abdomen and was rushed by supporters on a bike to a private hospital in Bandra (West).

The Kherwadi police have registered a case of attempted murder against unidentified assailants. To apprehend the attackers, the Zonal DCP and Mumbai Crime Branch have deployed three teams for the investigation.

Details of the Attack
According to Zone 8 DCP Manish Kalwania, Qureshi was injured around 5 PM while participating in the rally. The motive behind the attack will become clear once the suspects are apprehended. A police officer from Kherwadi noted that the attackers are currently unknown, which created tension in the area. Police quickly arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.

Formerly the General Secretary of AIMIM Mumbai, Haji Salim Qureshi joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction in September 2024. His wife, Gulnaz Salim Qureshi, has previously served as a corporator for Ward 92, Bandra (East). Qureshi’s move to the Shinde faction is considered to have strengthened their position in Mumbai’s Shiv Sena.

CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to identify the attackers. The Mumbai BMC elections are scheduled for January 15, with vote counting set for January 16. Shiv Sena, in this election, is contesting in alliance with the BJP.
