Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death; Fresh Violence Erupts Across Bangladesh

Dhaka: Bangladesh once again plunged into unrest after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The verdict triggered violent clashes between Awami League supporters and members of the Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, a student group formed after last year’s anti-government uprising.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, Awami League workers blocked several major highways across Dhaka, leading to widespread disruption. Multiple confrontations broke out between protesters and police, who used batons, sound grenades, and tear gas to disperse the crowds. At least two people have died in the violence so far.

The ICT found Sheikh Hasina guilty of crimes against humanity, accusing her of ordering violent repression during the student uprising in July last year. The verdict was delivered on Monday, though tensions had been rising across the country well before the announcement.

Nationwide Protests and Heavy Security Deployment

The Awami League—now a banned political party—had called for a two-day nationwide demonstration ahead of the verdict. From Monday morning, large processions were seen in Dhaka and other parts of the country, leading to heated clashes with rival groups.

Anticipating trouble, the Yunus-led interim government had deployed heavy police force across the capital, reportedly authorizing officers to open fire on violent mobs if necessary.

Capital on Edge

Several videos circulating on social media show police chasing protesters and beating them with batons. Loud explosions, believed to be sound grenades, were heard throughout the day.

Tension was especially high in Dhanmondi 32, the historic residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader and Sheikh Hasina’s father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Anti-Hasina groups reportedly attempted to vandalize properties in the area.

Multiple confrontations were also reported between Awami League members and activists of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, which was formed by student leaders who led last year’s anti-Hasina movement.
