Mumbai: Following the Bihar Assembly election results, where the JD(U)-BJP-led NDA registered a landslide victory, speculation about the future of Congress has intensified. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had predicted that Congress would soon break apart, calling it a “Muslim League-Maoist party.” In response, NCP chief and Maharashtra veteran leader Sharad Pawar issued a strong rebuttal, asserting that Congress is far from finished and will rise again.
Pawar’s Take on Congress’s Resilience
Speaking in Solapur amid the local body election atmosphere, Pawar said, “The Congress I understand is not the Congress that will vanish; it will re-emerge. Since it is a party that adheres to the ideals of the Gandhi-Nehru legacy, it will reach new heights once again.”
He drew historical parallels, noting that Congress had lost in Maharashtra in 1957 to the Samyukta Maharashtra Committee, yet the party never ceased to exist. “Parties face ups and downs, but they rise again. Congress is a perennial party, and I believe it will continue to hold its place in Indian politics,” Pawar added.
Comments on Bihar Election Results
Pawar referred to the Bihar polls, where NDA secured 202 seats, RJD won 25, and Congress managed only six seats. He emphasized the need for the opposition to reflect on policies like pre-election cash distribution for women, which might have influenced voting patterns.
Towards a United Opposition Strategy
Sharad Pawar hinted at coordinated opposition efforts ahead of the upcoming Parliament session. “We must accept the results, but the top leaders of all opposition parties should meet in Delhi to chart out a concrete strategy,” he said, indicating his focus on building a cohesive approach against ruling party policies.
Pawar’s statements send a clear message: despite electoral setbacks, Congress remains resilient, and its ideological legacy continues to hold significant political weight in India.
