Saran Lok Sabha: Why Every Lalu Family Candidate Faced Defeat Against Rajiv Pratap Rudy

Patna, Bihar: The Saran Lok Sabha constituency has long been a fiercely contested political battlefield in Bihar, yet the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has often emerged victorious, primarily under the leadership of Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Out of the last four elections, Rudy has won three times, consistently defeating candidates from the RJD family.

Frequent Change of RJD Candidates
One key factor behind RJD’s repeated losses has been the constant change of candidates. In 2009, Lalu Prasad Yadav fielded Rudy’s opponent and lost; in 2014, his wife Rabri Devi contested and was defeated; in 2019, Lalu’s son-in-law Chandrika Rai faced Rudy and lost again. In 2024, RJD nominated Lalu’s daughter Rohini Acharya, yet Rudy secured victory once more. This inconsistency prevented the RJD from building voter confidence around a single candidate.

Impact of Nepotism and Family Politics
The dominance of family politics in candidate selection has also negatively impacted RJD’s performance. The repeated reliance on Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family members created frustration among party workers, who felt sidelined and demotivated.

Decline of RJD’s Social Justice Image
Rudy’s success has also been aided by the gradual erosion of Lalu Yadav’s image as a champion of social justice. The perception of RJD’s influence weakening, combined with the rise of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah since 2014, allowed BJP to consolidate support among backward and non-Yadav communities.

Caste Equation
Saran’s complex caste demographics further favored Rudy. Yadavs make up 25%, Rajputs 23%, Vaishyas 20%, and other communities—including Muslims, Koiri, Kurmi, SC/ST—comprise the remainder. Electoral contests primarily center around Yadav versus Rajput voters, while Vaishya votes often play a decisive role. BJP’s strong organizational structure helped Rudy effectively mobilize support across these groups.

Overall, a combination of candidate instability in RJD, the decline of Lalu’s social justice appeal, favorable caste dynamics, and BJP’s organizational strength has ensured Rudy’s repeated victories in Saran.
