Madhubani: During the ongoing Samriddhi Yatra, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced projects worth ₹391 crore for Madhubani, focusing particularly on previously initiated but unfinished schemes. Among these is the ₹13.96 crore Sugarwe Bear Riverfront, aimed at boosting tourism and enhancing riverbank safety.
The Chief Minister emphasized comprehensive development, reviewing projects launched during earlier progress visits to Madhubani that remain incomplete.
Sugarwe Bear Riverfront
The Chief Minister inaugurated the Sugarwe Bear Riverfront at Araria Sangram in the Jhajharpur block. Constructed at a cost of ₹13.96 crore, the project includes riverbank development and protective measures. The initiative is intended to serve as a major attraction for both tourists and local residents. However, the project is yet to be fully completed.
Kosi Canal Expansion
Another major initiative under review is the expansion of the Kosi Canal near NH-57. Designed to improve irrigation facilities for farmers in Madhubani and Darbhanga districts, the project covers 26,879 hectares across 80 villages at an estimated cost of ₹569.18 crore. Despite its potential to enhance agricultural productivity, the project has not yet been fully delivered to the public.
River Revival Project
During the Pragati Yatra, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had issued special instructions for the river revival project aimed at doubling agricultural income. Once completed, this initiative is expected to irrigate 10,000 hectares of farmland, assist in flood prevention, and boost the production of aquatic crops such as makhana. However, this project also remains incomplete.
Other Pending Projects
The review also covered several other initiatives, including beautification of Amrit Sarovar under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali campaign, rooftop rainwater harvesting in schools, solar energy projects, and the construction of waste processing units. The Chief Minister had also directed the construction of stepped ghats around the Amrit Sarovar as part of the campaign. These projects continue to be under evaluation during the Samriddhi Yatra.
Through this visit, Nitish Kumar reinforced his commitment to ensuring that previously launched initiatives are completed efficiently while simultaneously introducing new development projects to accelerate Madhubani’s growth.
