Mumbai: Maharashtra’s political landscape witnessed renewed speculation after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray met Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, sparking debate about the implications of the encounter. The meeting, which took place at Shinde’s residence in Thane, drew criticism from political circles, especially Shiv Sena UBT, and raised eyebrows ahead of the BMC elections.
After Uddhav Thackeray reportedly expressed displeasure, Raj Thackeray addressed the media on Friday to clarify the purpose of his meeting. He emphasized that not every encounter should be interpreted politically.
Raj Thackeray’s Explanation
Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Raj Thackeray explained that his meeting with Deputy CM Shinde was focused on civic issues, not politics. He said, “Our cities are facing severe problems with traffic congestion, parking shortages, and illegal development. Roads and flyovers alone are not enough. Areas that previously housed 25-40 people now accommodate 400, but the infrastructure remains the same.”
He urged that the discussion should be seen as an attempt to address urban development concerns rather than a political maneuver.
The Political Angle
Despite Raj Thackeray’s clarification, speculation continues in political circles regarding the timing of the meeting. Reports suggest that MNS sought representation among nominated corporators in the BMC, but Uddhav Thackeray finalized the list of three Shiv Sena UBT nominees.
The next steps by either party will indicate whether the meeting had political undertones or was purely administrative. A total of 10 corporators will be nominated in the upcoming BMC proceedings.
