Bengaluru/Chandigarh: A massive political controversy has erupted after Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, claimed that only leaders who pay ₹500 crore can become Chief Minister of Punjab. The explosive remark triggered a nationwide debate and led to her expulsion from the Congress party.
Reacting sharply, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president D.K. Shivakumar lashed out at Navjot Kaur, calling her “mental” and suggesting she should be admitted to a good psychiatric hospital.
“Admit Such People to a Mental Hospital”: DK Shivakumar
Speaking to the media outside his residence in Bengaluru, Shivakumar was asked about Kaur’s sensational claim. Visibly irritated, he responded:
“People who make such statements should be admitted to a hospital — to a proper mental hospital.”
His comment has added fresh fuel to the political fire already raging around Kaur’s allegations.
What Navjot Kaur Sidhu Said
Navjot Kaur stirred controversy on Saturday when she alleged that:
“Only the leader who brings a ₹500 crore suitcase becomes Chief Minister of Punjab.”
She further claimed that her husband could transform Punjab if given a strong political mandate, but the couple lacked the funds required to please party high command through donations.
Her statement sparked outrage both within and outside the Congress, leading to the party distancing itself from her remarks.
Later, Kaur clarified that her words were “twisted and misinterpreted.”
In a post on X, she wrote:
“Our party has never demanded anything from us. When asked whether another party had approached my husband to be projected as CM, I replied that we don’t have the money needed to secure the Chief Minister’s chair.”
Pitch for Navjot Singh Sidhu as CM Face for 2027
Kaur also said that if Congress declares Navjot Singh Sidhu as its Chief Ministerial face ahead of the 2027 Assembly Elections, he would return to active politics.
According to her, Sidhu does not have funds to donate to any political outfit, yet he can “rebuild Punjab into a golden state.”
She also raised concerns about the law-and-order situation in Punjab, after meeting Governor Gulab Chand Kataria.
Did Anyone Ask for Money?
When asked directly whether any party demanded money from them, she denied it.
However, she reiterated:
“Only the person who brings ₹500 crore becomes Chief Minister.”
Her claim has intensified scrutiny over the role of big-money influence in Punjab politics.
Shivakumar Denies Delhi Visit Speculations
Responding to reports of his planned visit to Delhi around December 20, Shivakumar said:
“There is a global summit happening in Hyderabad. We have been invited, so I and some officers will be attending. We will discuss the rest later.”
