PM Modi to Visit Oman: India’s Loyal Ally in West Asia Opens Strategic Doors

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant visit to Oman next week, a trip that underscores the deep and longstanding strategic partnership between the two nations. Oman, one of India’s oldest and most reliable allies in West Asia, has consistently supported India politically, economically, and militarily for over seven decades.

A Strategic and Economic Ally

Officials familiar with India-Oman relations highlight that Oman is not only a key economic partner in the oil-rich Gulf region but also a critical defense collaborator. The recent strengthening of defense cooperation and expansion of bilateral trade has added heightened importance to Modi’s visit.

This trip coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Oman. Just under two years ago, in December 2023, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq made his first state visit to India, signaling mutual commitment to furthering the relationship.

India Gains Strategic Access

Oman has historically stood with India, including during the 1971 war with Pakistan, when it offered steadfast support. In recent years, joint defense exercises have bolstered military ties, making Oman the first Gulf nation to allow Indian Navy access to the Duqm port. This strategic facilitation strengthens India’s presence in West Asia and enhances its operational reach across the Indian Ocean.

A Trusted Partner in the Muslim World

Oman continues to be a steadfast supporter of India in regional and international forums. Indian-origin Omanis occupy key positions, amplifying India’s influence. Oman has also voiced India’s stance on counter-terrorism consistently within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), making it a unique Muslim ally in the region.

Bilateral Trade and Economic Prospects

Experts say Modi’s visit could pave the way for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, further boosting trade and investment opportunities. According to the Indian Embassy in Muscat, bilateral trade rose from $8.95 billion in 2023-24 to $10.61 billion in 2024-25, reflecting growing economic engagement.

Prime Minister Modi’s Oman visit thus symbolizes not just diplomatic courtesy, but a strategic and economic milestone, strengthening India’s position in West Asia and fortifying ties with a trusted ally.
