
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and paid tribute by sharing old photographs from their meeting a decade ago.
PM Modi recalled his 2015 meeting with Khaleda Zia in Dhaka, describing it as a warm and memorable encounter. In his post, he extended heartfelt condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh, writing, “I am deeply saddened to learn about the demise of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. My heartfelt condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May God give strength to her loved ones to bear this loss.”
Highlighting her contributions, PM Modi added that as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia played a pivotal role in the country’s development and in strengthening India-Bangladesh relations. He noted, “Her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace.”
A Life Marked by Leadership and Resilience
Khaleda Zia, born on 15 August 1945 in Dinajpur, Bangladesh, was a prominent political leader and former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She was the wife of former President Ziaur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1981. In her later years, she faced prolonged illness, with doctors reporting her condition as critical.
Her passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and resilience that shaped both her country and its ties with India.
