Patna: Bihar’s political atmosphere is expected to heat up on Tuesday as student and women’s organisations prepare to launch a major protest in Patna against the alleged rise in crimes against women and the mysterious death of a NEET aspirant.
Amid the ongoing Budget Session of the Bihar Legislature, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the All India Progressive Women’s Association (AIPWA) have announced an Assembly gherao and a large-scale protest march from Gandhi Maidan to the Bihar Legislative Assembly, demanding justice and accountability from the state government.
The protest, being termed as a ‘Beti Bachao Nyay Yatra’ (Save the Daughter Justice Campaign), is expected to draw hundreds of activists and supporters, potentially leading to massive disruptions on city roads and heightened security arrangements near the Assembly premises.
‘Beti Bachao Nyay Yatra’ Concludes in Patna
The campaign reportedly began from Jehanabad on February 4 and concluded in Patna on Monday. As part of the final phase, activists will gather at Gandhi Maidan and proceed towards the Assembly, raising slogans and demanding immediate action against increasing violence targeting women and girl students.
The organisations alleged that incidents of women’s harassment and violence have increased after the elections and claimed that the government has failed to ensure safety in educational and residential institutions.
Demand for Immediate Safety Audit
AISA and AIPWA have demanded that the state government conduct an urgent security audit of all private hostels and coaching institutes in Bihar. They also demanded strict action against police officers accused of negligence in cases related to women and child crimes.
The protesters have further urged authorities to ensure a fear-free environment for victims’ families so that they can pursue justice without intimidation.
Questions Raised Over Police Handling of NEET Student Case
The protest has been largely triggered by the controversial death of a NEET aspirant at Shambhu Girls Hostel in Patna, which has raised serious questions about police conduct and investigation procedures.
The organisations accused the police of allegedly hiding evidence and pressuring the victim’s family. Although a recommendation for a CBI probe has been made, protesters are demanding that the investigation be carried out under the supervision of a sitting Supreme Court judge to ensure fairness and transparency.
Concerns have also been raised over delays in forensic examination and retrieval of CCTV footage, which could become a major issue both inside and outside the Assembly during the Budget Session.
With the opposition and protest groups gearing up for a showdown, Patna may witness heightened political tension and heavy security deployment throughout the day.
