Mumbai/Pune: The political heat in Maharashtra has intensified over the Pune land scam involving Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth Pawar. Parth is accused of purchasing government land worth ₹1,800 crore at a fraction of its market price. Amid mounting scrutiny, social activist Anna Hazare has added to the pressure, asserting that ministers should be held accountable for the wrongdoing of their children.
Anna Hazare’s Statement
Speaking to the media, Hazare said, “It is truly unfortunate that ministers’ children are involved in illegal activities. In such cases, the ministers themselves must be held responsible. Values begin at home, and these incidents reflect a lack of moral values in families.” Hazare, known for leading major anti-corruption movements in Delhi that contributed to the rise of the Aam Aadmi Party, emphasized that ethical integrity starts within households.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy revolves around a Pune-based company co-owned by Parth Pawar. Allegations suggest that the company purchased government land valued at ₹1,800 crore for just ₹300 crore, sparking outrage over potential corruption and favoritism. Following public criticism, Ajit Pawar claimed that the deal had been canceled.
Political and Social Dimensions
Anna Hazare’s remarks came shortly after he met Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a water conservation event, where Shinde honored Hazare with a shawl. Hazare later spoke to the media, urging strict action by the government against the alleged irregularities.
The scandal has put Ajit Pawar and the NCP under political pressure, with debates extending from Mumbai to Delhi, highlighting concerns over ethics and accountability for ministers’ families.
