Following the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has launched a major internal clean-up within the Janata Dal (United) [JDU] to strengthen the party from within and ensure organizational discipline. The CM has taken strict action against rebels and dissenters who worked against the party’s official candidates during the polls.
Patna: Nitish Kumar has begun wielding the “discipline stick” before setting up a new party structure. Inspired by the adage, “a single fish can pollute the pond,” he is systematically removing elements deemed detrimental to the party’s integrity. Once this operation is complete, the JDU plans to rebuild its organization with loyal and committed workers, giving it a sharper and more cohesive structure.
Why the Action?
During the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, internal rebellion surfaced at multiple levels. Discontent arose when some seats were allocated to alliance partners, and intensified further during the announcement of official JDU candidates. While appeals and interventions, including from the CM himself, helped curb the dissent in some areas, internal opposition persisted in several constituencies. Following careful review, disciplinary action was initiated against leaders whose activities directly challenged the party and alliance candidates.
Who Were the Leaders Involved?
The JDU disciplinary team has expelled 12 senior leaders from the party for six years. These leaders were found guilty of actively working against the party and alliance candidates during the Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. The expelled leaders include: Ashok Singh, Ramdas Sada, Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Sanjay Kushwaha, Kamla Dashahara, Prince, Avinash, Lal Dev, Gopal Sharma, Mahendra Singh, Das Murtaja, Amit Kumar, and Md. Jameelur Rahman.
Purpose Behind the Move
The clean-up has several objectives:
- To prevent anti-party activities and maintain strict discipline within the organization.
- To ensure a smooth membership drive across the state by removing individuals whose presence could encourage dissent.
- To restructure the party organization ahead of future elections, ensuring loyal leadership at both state and national levels.
- To guarantee proper monitoring of government schemes down to the panchayat level, ensuring that new leaders actively implement and oversee Nitish Kumar’s programs.
With this decisive operation, Nitish Kumar aims to present a revitalized and disciplined JDU, prepared to tackle organizational and electoral challenges in Bihar and beyond.
