Nitish Kumar Announces Rs 391-Crore Development Package for Madhubani Under Samriddhi Yatra

Patna/Madhubani: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced development projects worth ₹391 crore for Madhubani district during the second phase of his Samriddhi Yatra, aimed at accelerating inclusive growth and completing long-pending infrastructure works.

Addressing a public gathering in Madhubani, the Chief Minister said the focus of the government is on comprehensive development, particularly the completion of projects that were inaugurated or laid earlier but remain unfinished. He asserted that these initiatives would significantly transform the socio-economic landscape of the district.

Seven Major Projects Approved for Madhubani

The Chief Minister announced approval for seven key projects, which are expected to be completed at the earliest:

  • Linking the Old Kamla River with the Kamla River
  • Expansion of Mithila Haat
  • Construction of a new bus terminal in Madhubani
  • Development of the Madhubani Ring Road
  • Development of Phulhar as a tourist destination
  • Establishment of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Laukhi
  • Extension of the Western Kosi Canal

“These projects will change the face of Madhubani and provide long-term benefits to the people,” Nitish Kumar said.

Focus on Education, Health and Connectivity

Highlighting the achievements of the NDA government, the Chief Minister said Madhubani has witnessed significant progress in the education and health sectors over the years. He listed the construction of an engineering college, women’s ITI, medical college and hospital in Jhanjharpur, Karpuri hostels, and several medical institutions.

He also pointed to improved connectivity, including the construction of bridges and roads, the Madhubani–Saharsa road via Supaul, a rail overbridge over the Kamla River, and strengthening of embankments to prevent floods.

Free Electricity and Governance Claims

Reiterating his government’s welfare measures, Nitish Kumar said that since July 2025, all domestic consumers in Bihar are being provided 125 units of electricity free of cost. “For the first time, people’s electricity bills have become zero. We have ensured that there is no financial burden on households,” he said.

Criticism of Previous Regimes

In his address, the Chief Minister once again criticized the RJD-led governments prior to 2005, stating that real development in Bihar began only after the NDA came to power. He said roads, schools, hospitals and law and order conditions improved significantly after November 2005.

Review of Pending Projects

During the visit, Nitish Kumar also reviewed several incomplete projects, including the Sugarcane Barrage Riverfront in Jhanjharpur, built at a cost of ₹13.96 crore, canal extension projects aimed at improving irrigation across Madhubani and Darbhanga districts, and the River Rejuvenation Scheme intended to boost agricultural productivity and flood management.

Other pending initiatives under review include projects under the Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali Mission, such as Amrit Sarovars, rooftop rainwater harvesting in schools, solar energy installations, and waste processing units.

Political Context

The Chief Minister arrived in Madhubani at around 11:40 am, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Cabinet Minister Vijay Choudhary. Notably, the NDA won 9 out of 10 seats in the district in the last elections, underlining the coalition’s strong political footing in the Mithila region.

The second phase of the Samriddhi Yatra will continue till January 29 and will be paused during the Bihar Legislative Assembly session, before resuming thereafter.
