Indore, MP: On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee President Jitu Patwari sparked controversy with his remarks on the assassination of the Father of the Nation. Addressing the media in Indore, Patwari described Nathuram Godse as “India’s first terrorist,” saying that Godse not only killed Gandhi’s physical self but also sought to destroy the ideals of truth, non-violence, and brotherhood that had united the nation.
Patwari criticized the current political climate, drawing parallels between the ideology that motivated Gandhi’s assassination and contemporary forces, which he alleged are spreading hatred and attempting to weaken democracy. He stated, “The same ideology that killed Gandhi is today trying to undermine democratic values and push the country toward authoritarianism.”
Referring to Gandhi’s last words, “Hey Ram,” Patwari highlighted their significance, emphasizing that Gandhi remained devoted to truth and righteousness until his final moments. He warned that the same divisive thinking continues to sow hatred and conflict among citizens, pitting one community against another.
On issues of governance and democracy, Patwari urged citizens to remain vigilant and recognize attempts to weaken democratic institutions, including alleged manipulations of voter lists. He called upon all who wish to preserve democracy to oppose such ideologies and uphold the principles of unity, equality, and justice.
