
Dehradun: In a major step to enhance air connectivity to Uttarakhand’s hilly regions, the Government of Uttarakhand and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the acquisition and development of Naini Saini Airport, Pithoragarh, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
The historic MoU marks a significant stride toward seamless, safe, and sustainable air connectivity in the strategic Himalayan region. The airport spans approximately 70 acres and currently features a terminal capable of serving 40 passengers during peak hours. Its apron can accommodate two Code-2B aircraft simultaneously, ensuring operational flexibility.
The acquisition will enable upgradation of infrastructure, streamlined operational standards, and improved regional connectivity, benefiting both residents and tourists. PM Modi highlighted that the development of Naini Saini Airport will not only boost tourism, local trade, and pilgrimage activities but also create new employment opportunities for local youth. The initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of accessible and sustainable aviation infrastructure, while strengthening disaster response capabilities in the Himalayan region.
During his visit to Dehradun for the Uttarakhand Silver Jubilee celebrations, PM Modi also released a special commemorative postal stamp and a coffee table book showcasing Uttarakhand’s heritage and progress. Additionally, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for 19 development projects worth ₹7,329.06 crore and inaugurated 12 projects worth ₹931.65 crore, contributing to the state’s ongoing growth trajectory.
The development of Naini Saini Airport is set to become a milestone in Uttarakhand’s journey toward enhanced infrastructure, tourism, and economic development, reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernizing aviation in strategic hilly regions.
