Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a reduction in tariffs on Indian goods, the Congress party launched a sharp critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of appearing under pressure before President Trump and dismissed claims portraying him as the “Father of All Deals.”
Congress Questions Modi’s Stand in Washington
Speaking on social media platform X, Jairam Ramesh highlighted that key announcements—halting Operation Sindoor, updates on India’s oil imports from Russia and Venezuela, and the India-U.S. trade agreement—were all made from Washington, D.C. He commented sarcastically, saying, “Clearly, Mogambo is happy in Washington.”
Ramesh alleged that Modi now appears uncomfortable even in the presence of President Trump, whereas earlier there had been visible warmth between the leaders. He added, “It seems as if the Prime Minister has conceded defeat. He cannot be called the ‘Father of All Deals’ under these circumstances.”
U.S. Tariff on Indian Goods Reduced to 18%
President Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that U.S. tariffs on Indian goods have been reduced from 25% to 18%. PM Modi welcomed the move, tweeting that it was a pleasure to speak with his “dear friend” Trump and expressed his happiness over the tariff reduction. Modi thanked President Trump on behalf of India’s 1.4 billion citizens for this “wonderful announcement.”
