Maharashtra BJP Chief Ravindra Chavan Apologizes to Vilasrao Deshmukh’s Son Amid Latur Civic Poll Controversy

Mumbai/Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Ahead of the Latur Municipal Corporation elections, Maharashtra BJP President Ravindra Chavan issued a public apology to Amit Deshmukh, son of former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, over his controversial remarks suggesting that Deshmukh’s legacy could be erased from his hometown. Chavan clarified on Tuesday that his statement was not politically motivated and expressed regret if it hurt the sentiments of the late leader’s family.

The Controversial Remarks
Chavan’s statement on Monday had sparked widespread outrage when he addressed BJP workers in Latur, saying, “Your enthusiasm gives me full confidence that the memories of Vilasrao Deshmukh will be erased from this city.” The comment was widely interpreted as an attempt to undermine the legacy of the two-time Maharashtra Chief Minister, who is revered for his contributions to the region’s development.

Congress and Public Reaction
The remark drew sharp criticism from the Congress party, which accused the BJP of belittling the work of a leader who dedicated his life to Maharashtra’s development. Amit Deshmukh condemned the statement, asserting that no outsider can erase the memories of his father. Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh also expressed emotional outrage, stating that while written words can be erased, the profound impact of a leader on people’s hearts cannot be removed.

Chavan’s Clarification and Apology
Responding to the backlash, Chavan clarified that his intention was not to criticize Vilasrao Deshmukh. He emphasized that local civic issues and public welfare should be the priority in the Latur elections, rather than political rhetoric. “Vilasrao Deshmukh was a great leader and served as Chief Minister. If my statement hurt the sentiments of his son or anyone else, I sincerely apologize,” Chavan said, urging people not to view his remarks in a political light.

Chavan also noted that the focus should be on who can effectively address citizens’ problems, rather than dwelling on legacy politics. He insisted that voters in Latur must prioritize development and local governance in the upcoming elections.

Legacy of Vilasrao Deshmukh
Vilasrao Deshmukh, a two-time Chief Minister of Maharashtra, remains a deeply respected figure in Latur for his contribution to regional development. Riteish Deshmukh, in a video statement, said, “People who serve the public leave a lasting impression on their hearts. You can erase writings, but you cannot erase the impact they create.” Amit Deshmukh echoed the sentiment, calling Chavan’s remarks “regrettable and hurtful,” noting that they offended the citizens of Latur.

This apology comes at a critical juncture as political parties gear up for the Latur civic polls, underscoring the sensitivity of legacy politics in Maharashtra.
