Karnataka CM Issue Intensifies: Even Sonia Gandhi Unable to Broker Peace Between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar; Another High-Level Meeting Soon

BENGALURU:
The power tussle over changing the Chief Minister in Karnataka has once again pushed the state’s Congress unit into turbulence. Amid heightened political speculation and growing factional pressure, the Congress high command is preparing for yet another crucial round of discussions to break the deadlock between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

No Consensus Despite Marathon Meeting at 10 Janpath

A long and intensive meeting was held on Saturday at Sonia Gandhi’s residence, 10 Janpath, in New Delhi. Present in the meeting were Sonia Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal.

Sources indicate that despite multiple rounds of deliberation, the leadership failed to arrive at a final decision. After the meeting, Venugopal said that the discussions were not limited to Karnataka alone but also focused on the national political situation and preparations for the party’s rally scheduled on 14 December at Ramlila Maidan.

Meanwhile, the party leadership has categorically instructed all Karnataka leaders to refrain from making public comments on the issue, warning that any loose statements may escalate the ongoing tensions.

The Two-and-a-Half-Year Formula Sparks Fresh Debate

The Congress government in Karnataka recently completed two and a half years in office, reigniting talks of an alleged rotational power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar made at the time of government formation in 2023. Though both leaders have publicly denied any written pact, internal groups within the party continue to push for leadership change based on this understanding.

Next Meeting to Be Crucial

With differences between the two top leaders still unresolved, another high-level meeting is expected soon, where the final call is likely to be taken. Party insiders claim that the Congress high command is keen on finding a “peaceful and acceptable formula” before things escalate further. For now, the direction from Delhi is clear — maintain silence and avoid public confrontation.

As the pressure builds and the political climate in Karnataka heats up, all eyes are on the Congress leadership’s next move, which could determine the future course of the state government.
