Kanpur MLA Surendra Maithani Faces Trouble as Non-Bailable Warrant Issued

Trouble has mounted for BJP MLA Surendra Maithani from Kanpur as a non-bailable warrant (NBW) was issued against him by the local court. The order was passed after he failed to appear in court to give testimony in a pending case.

According to reports, the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Suraj Mishra in Kanpur issued the NBW against Surendra Maithani from Govind Nagar on Thursday. Upon learning of the warrant, the MLA surrendered himself to the court. The court subsequently canceled the warrant on the condition of a personal bond of ₹20,000 and warned him to appear for future court hearings.

The case dates back to 9 February 2011, when Maithani filed a report at Swarup Nagar Police Station regarding an incident in which his relative, Puneet Mohan Dhimri of Dibber village, Shimli Post, Karn Prayag, Chamoli, Uttarakhand, was killed in a road accident. Puneet, an engineer traveling by tempo to Mall Road, had been hit near Benajabar Akashvani.

Police investigations later identified the driver as Mushtaq Ali, a resident of Bekenjanj Talak Mahal, who had fled the scene. Despite repeated attempts, authorities were unable to locate him at the time.

As Maithani is a plaintiff in the case, the court had repeatedly summoned him to record his statement. However, he failed to appear, prompting the court to issue the non-bailable warrant directing his arrest and production before the court. Maithani complied and surrendered on Thursday evening, after which the warrant was canceled with conditions.
