In a significant political development in Telangana, the Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council, Gutha Sukhender Reddy, has accepted the resignation of K Kavitha, the suspended Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Kavitha had been elected as an MLC in 2021 from the Nizamabad Local Authorities Constituency. She had previously resigned from both her MLC position and the BRS party on September 3, 2025.
Kavitha’s Resignation from Legislative Council
Kavitha, the president of Telangana Jagruti, officially requested the Council Chairman on Monday to accept her resignation from the Legislative Council. The resignation was promptly accepted, and the Secretariat issued an official notice confirming her resignation. This move marks a crucial moment in the political landscape of Telangana, particularly in the context of shifts within the BRS party and the state legislature.
Kavitha to Form Her Own Political Party?
Just a day before her resignation was confirmed, Kavitha made an appeal for unity, calling on all sections of society to come together for the creation of a ‘Social Telangana.’ According to a statement released from her office, leaders from various organizations, including Telangana Movement JAC, employee unions, caste-based organizations, and student groups, expressed their support for Kavitha’s initiative. These groups believe that there is a need for a new political party focused on the identity of Telangana.
Kavitha met with her supporters, including activists from Telangana Jagruti, and representatives from various organizations at her office in Banjara Hills. A large crowd gathered, chanting “Jai Kavithakka,” expressing their solidarity and enthusiasm for her leadership. Kavitha thanked them for their support and assured them that her struggle would align with the aspirations of the people of Telangana, aiming to create a democratic movement for the state.
Support from Various Organizations
Representatives from Singareni workers, government employees, BC (Backward Classes) organizations, and student unions also assured Kavitha of their full support. They expressed confidence that the new political party led by Kavitha would work towards the welfare of all sections of Telangana society.
Suspension from BRS and Allegations Against KCR
During a recent speech, Kavitha criticized her father K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), the Chief Minister of Telangana and the leader of the BRS, accusing his government of corruption during the previous BRS tenure. She labeled the party’s constitution as a ‘mockery’ and distanced herself from some of the unpopular decisions taken under the BRS regime.
Kavitha was suspended from the BRS in September 2025 after accusing her cousins and party leaders, T. Harish Rao and J. Santosh Kumar, of tarnishing her father’s image in relation to the controversial Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project. Since her suspension, Kavitha has been actively engaged in public issues under the banner of her cultural organization, Telangana Jagruti.
Kavitha’s Political Ambitions
In December 2025, Kavitha announced that her political platform would contest in the upcoming Telangana Legislative Assembly elections. This declaration has garnered significant attention, as she positions herself as a prominent challenger to her father’s political dominance in the state.
