Patna/Imphal: The formation of a new BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Manipur has moved a step closer, as the Janata Dal (United) has officially extended its support to the proposed government.
The party, which is a constituent of the NDA, announced that its lone MLA in Manipur will back the BJP-led coalition, clearing the way for the installation of a new government in the violence-hit state.
Support Letter Submitted to Governor
JDU National General Secretary and North-East In-Charge Afaque Ahmad Khan confirmed the development, stating that the party has submitted a formal letter of support to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
With the submission of the support letter, the path for government formation in Manipur is now almost clear.
Decision Taken for Stability and Development
JDU National Secretary Mohammad Nisar said the party has taken the decision in the interest of political stability and to accelerate development work in the state.
He emphasized that after a prolonged phase of uncertainty, it is necessary to establish a strong and stable government in Manipur, and the party believes this step will help restore governance and confidence among the people.
NDA Stakes Claim to Form Government
Earlier, during the NDA legislature party meeting, Yumnam Khemchand Singh was elected as the leader of the NDA legislative group. Following this, NDA leaders met the Governor and formally staked claim to form the government.
Officials have reportedly begun completing constitutional formalities at a fast pace, as the current period of President’s Rule is set to expire soon.
President’s Rule Ends on February 12, 2026
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025, after former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025, following months of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
The President’s Rule is scheduled to end on February 12, 2026, making the formation of a new government urgent.
Two Deputy Chief Ministers Likely
Sources indicate that the upcoming government may include the appointment of two Deputy Chief Ministers to maintain social and regional balance in the state.
With the JDU’s support now confirmed, the BJP-led NDA appears set to return to power in Manipur once again.
