During this Christmas season, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP National President JP Nadda participated in two major events linked to the Christian community, sparking discussions about the party’s strategy ahead of the 2026 state assembly elections. The upcoming polls in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry are expected to see the Christian vote play a significant role, raising questions about the BJP’s outreach efforts.
Focus on Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry
In Kerala, Christians make up just over 18% of the population, making them a significant electoral bloc. In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, their population exceeds 6%, which, while smaller, can still influence outcomes in tightly contested constituencies. Historically, PM Modi has actively engaged with the Christian community during festivals and religious events, reflecting a decade-long pattern of outreach rather than a sudden electoral move.
Modi and Nadda at Christmas Events
On Thursday, PM Modi attended the Christmas morning service and carols at Delhi’s Cathedral Church of Redemption, led by Bishop Dr. Paul Swaroop, which included prayers for the Prime Minister. JP Nadda participated in a grand Christmas celebration at the Christian Higher Secondary School in New Delhi. These visits continue Modi’s longstanding practice of engaging with Christian leaders and communities, complementing his broader tradition of connecting with people of all faiths.
A Decade of Christian Outreach
Despite his frequent participation in Hindu religious events, including the Ram Temple ceremonies in Ayodhya, PM Modi has consistently maintained ties with Christian representatives, bishops, and clergy since assuming office in Delhi. Notable engagements include the Easter celebration at Sacred Heart Cathedral in 2023, as well as attending Christmas at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, meeting community leaders.
Christian leaders have also found representation in the cabinet. Former Tourism Minister K.J. Alphons and current Minister of State George Kurian exemplify this inclusion. Internationally, PM Modi has engaged with Catholic Church leaders and met Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2021 to discuss pandemic response and humanitarian issues.
Electoral Implications
While PM Modi’s interactions with the Christian community are part of a broader approach to engaging all faiths, the timing of these visits ahead of elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry naturally draws political attention. The Prime Minister has similarly maintained connections with Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities, including visiting Ajmer Sharif Dargah and meeting various religious leaders.
Thus, while these Christmas engagements demonstrate Modi’s inclusive approach, they also carry electoral resonance in regions where Christian votes can be decisive. Analysts suggest that in a democracy, such outreach must be viewed both as a social gesture and a political strategy, reflecting the dual dimensions of governance and election preparedness.
