Lucknow: In a sharp political swipe, Rae Bareli MLA and BJP leader Aditi Singh has criticised Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi for what she described as infrequent visits to Rae Bareli, a traditional stronghold of the Congress party.
Speaking in an interview with a private news channel, Aditi Singh remarked that visiting Rae Bareli only once a year—or merely during election season—has no meaning. “If she (Priyanka Gandhi) is famous here as Didi, then she should visit more often,” Singh stated.
During the interview, when the anchor mentioned that Priyanka Gandhi is also popularly known as Didi in the region, Aditi Singh responded with a pointed remark:
“If she is so famous, she should also take the trouble of visiting sometimes — or will she only come during elections?”
The BJP MLA further added that leaders must stay connected with the people if they expect support from them. “Coming here once a year or only during elections doesn’t help. That is why the party is losing ground. Only a couple of MPs and two MLAs remain. To earn people’s support, one must stay among them and work hard,” she said.
Aditi Singh, who was once a prominent face of the Congress in Rae Bareli, switched to the BJP ahead of the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Her father, Akhilesh Singh, was a five-time MLA from Rae Bareli and widely known for his strong influence and assertive political style. He was expelled from the Congress in 2003 over criminal allegations, but Aditi Singh joined the Congress in 2016 before eventually moving to the BJP.
