Humayun Kabir’s Big Political Move: Alliance with Owaisi, Plan for New Party, and Ambition to Capture Bengal in 2026

Kolkata:
With the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections approaching, political activities in the state are gaining momentum. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has stirred the political waters by announcing his willingness to forge an alliance with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). While Kabir says he is already in touch with Akbaruddin Owaisi’s personal assistant, AIMIM has not officially responded yet.

According to sources, AIMIM wants Kabir to join the party directly, but Kabir prefers a pre-poll alliance rather than merging himself with AIMIM.

New Political Party to be Launched on December 22

Just a day after laying the foundation stone of a “Babri Masjid–style mosque” in Murshidabad’s Raninagar, Humayun Kabir signalled a major shift in his political trajectory.
He announced that he will unveil his new political party on December 22.

Earlier, Kabir had hinted at resigning as TMC MLA on December 17, but he withdrew the plan, saying:
“The people of Bharatpur elected me. Resigning now would put them in difficulty, so I will continue.”

Who is Humayun Kabir? A Career Full of Twists

Humayun Kabir’s political career has been marked by several dramatic shifts:

  • Began public life in the early 1990s with Youth Congress
  • Elected MLA from Raninagar in 2011 on a Congress ticket
  • Joined TMC in 2012 and became a minister
  • Expelled by TMC for six years
  • Contested as an Independent in 2016 and lost
  • Joined BJP in 2018 and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Murshidabad, losing again
  • Returned to TMC in 2021 after his expulsion period ended, and won from Bharatpur

TMC has questioned Kabir’s ideological consistency, pointing out his past association with BJP and his public praise of BJP leaders.

Kabir Reveals His Election Game Plan

Outlining his political roadmap for 2026, Kabir said:

  • He is ready for an alliance with AIMIM
  • CPM and ISF are “open” to discussions (though both have denied this claim)
  • His bloc plans to contest 135 seats
  • He is willing to leave 10 seats for Congress, citing Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s strong influence in Murshidabad

However, all three—ISF, CPM, and Congress—have rejected Kabir’s claims outright.

Alliance Partners Distance Themselves

  • ISF MLA Naushad Siddiqui said he has not spoken to Kabir and ruled out any alliance. He also demanded Kabir retract allegedly insulting remarks about Hindus.
  • CPM state secretary Md. Salim clarified that no seat-sharing discussions have taken place.
  • Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury urged people not to fall for religious polarization, saying such moves help only TMC and BJP, not the common public.

TMC Attacks Kabir Over ‘Political Opportunism’

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh criticized Kabir, saying:
“I am a Hindu, but my conscience could never accept the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. When Kabir joined the BJP, where was his conscience? He is using religious polarization to chase political goals.”

Ghosh added that voters have seen Kabir’s frequent political switches and will judge him accordingly in the coming elections.
