
Patna, Bihar: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to embark on a statewide ‘Samriddhi Yatra’ immediately after Makar Sankranti. The journey aims to assess the ground-level implementation of the state government’s flagship initiatives, particularly the ‘Pragati Yatra’ and ‘Saat Nishchay’ schemes. As part of this Yatra, the Chief Minister will traverse the Tirhut division, a region that has historically provided strong political support. Observers suggest that Nitish Kumar may offer a significant “return gift” to the people of Tirhut in recognition of their overwhelming mandate during the last Assembly elections.
Tirhut Division: An Overview
The Tirhut division, established in 1908, is a historical and administrative hub in Bihar. It comprises six key districts: Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, and Vaishali, encompassing a total of 49 Assembly constituencies.
- Muzaffarpur district: 11 seats – Muzaffarpur, Gaya Ghat, Aurai, Minapur, Bochaha, Sakra, Kudhni, Kanti, Bauraj, Paroo, and Sahebganj
- East Champaran: 12 seats
- West Champaran: 9 seats – Valmikinagar, Ramnagar, Narkatiyaganj, Bagaha, Lauriya, Nautan, Chanpatia, Bettiah, and Sikta
- Sitamarhi: 8 seats
- Sheohar: 1 seat – Sheohar
- Vaishali: 8 seats
NDA’s Performance in Tirhut During Bihar Elections
In the previous Bihar Assembly elections, Tirhut emerged as a stronghold for the NDA, with voters expressing strong confidence in Nitish Kumar’s leadership and development agenda.
- Sitamarhi and Sheohar: NDA achieved a clean sweep, winning all 8 seats in Sitamarhi and the single seat in Sheohar.
- Muzaffarpur: NDA won 10 out of 11 seats, with only Paroo slipping due to a rebel candidate.
- East Champaran: 11 out of 12 seats went to NDA
- West Champaran: 8 out of 9 seats went to NDA
- Vaishali: 7 out of 8 seats went to NDA, with Tejashwi Yadav retaining the Raghupur seat
In total, the NDA secured 47 out of 49 seats in the Tirhut division, handing Nitish Kumar a historic electoral gift and demonstrating public trust in his governance and development initiatives.
Nitish Kumar’s Return Gift?
With the Samriddhi Yatra now entering Tirhut, all eyes are on the Chief Minister to see what development initiatives or projects he will announce as a “return gift” to the people who gave him such overwhelming support. The Yatra is expected to strengthen the connection between the state government and its citizens while showcasing the tangible results of key schemes.
