Gamosa Controversy Intensifies: After Rahul, BJP Targets Priyanka Gandhi

New Delhi, February 21, 2026: The political storm over Assam’s cultural symbol, the Gamosa, shows no signs of dying down. Following allegations against Rahul Gandhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has now turned its attention to Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accusing her of disrespecting Assam’s heritage during her recent visit to the state.

BJP Accuses Priyanka Gandhi

BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla shared a video of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on social media platform X, claiming that she insulted the Gamosa, Assam’s traditional symbol of respect. He further alleged that the Congress leadership has shown insensitivity toward the North-East region and Assam.

Allegations Against the Gandhi Family

Poonawalla asserted that the Gandhi family harbors an ongoing disregard for the North-East, citing past incidents and claiming a pattern of disrespect:

  • Indira Gandhi allegedly dropped bombs on Assam via the Air Force
  • Jawaharlal Nehru allegedly left Assam vulnerable to China
  • The North-East was allegedly kept isolated from the rest of India
  • Rahul Gandhi reportedly excluded Assam from the “Bharat Jodo” map
  • The governments led by Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh allegedly neglected infrastructure and development in the region

Targeting Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, Poonawalla claimed that even he supposedly favors illegal immigrants and foreigners over local Assamese citizens, reflecting Congress’s lack of connection with the state.

Background: Rahul Gandhi Controversy

The Gamosa controversy first erupted in January, when Rahul Gandhi reportedly refused to wear the traditional Assamese scarf during a welcome ceremony hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. BJP accused him of disrespecting the North-East, while Congress countered that even Defence Minister Rajnath Singh did not wear the ceremonial scarf.

With Priyanka Gandhi now under scrutiny, the political battle over the Gamosa symbol continues to escalate, keeping Assam and the North-East at the center of a national debate on respect and cultural identity.
