Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful message to the world on Sunday from Somnath, Gujarat, highlighting India’s resilience, history, and strategic stance in contemporary global affairs.
Addressing the audience, PM Modi recalled how invaders from Ghajni to Aurangzeb attacked Somnath, believing their swords could conquer the eternal temple. He emphasized that history shows otherwise—Somnath has always been rebuilt and restored, symbolizing the courage, sacrifice, and perseverance of India’s ancestors.
Global Context and India’s Strategic Position
India is currently navigating multiple international challenges. On one hand, it is managing US tariff wars under Donald Trump’s trade policies, while on the other, it is maintaining a firm stance against terrorist networks in Pakistan. India is also closely monitoring anti-Hindu attacks in Bangladesh and taking decisive measures.
The Prime Minister also indirectly addressed China and Turkey, countries that have, at times, supported adversarial operations. India has asserted itself diplomatically, warning that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and will remain so regardless of external denial. Meanwhile, Indian tourists and diplomatic engagement have also impacted Turkey’s tourism sector, signaling India’s growing influence in the region.
Somnath: A Symbol of Victory and Renewal
Speaking at the Somnath Swabhimaan Festival, PM Modi highlighted that this event marks 1,000 years since the temple’s first historical destruction and 75 years since its reconstruction in 1951. He described the festival not merely as a remembrance of destruction but as a celebration of India’s continuity, pride, and resilience.
“The history of Somnath is not one of defeat and destruction, but of victory and reconstruction. Our ancestors displayed immense valor, sacrifice, and commitment. Invaders came, yet Somnath was rebuilt in every era—an unparalleled example in world history.”
He added:
“A thousand years ago, our forebears risked their lives for faith, devotion, and Lord Shiva. The invaders thought they had won, but today, even after a millennium, the flag over Somnath Mahadev proclaims to the world the power and strength of India.”
Spiritual Significance of Somnath
PM Modi explained the deeper spiritual essence of Somnath:
“The invaders failed to understand that the temple’s very name—‘Som’ meaning elixir—represents immortality. Within it resides Sadashiv Mahadev, a conscious power that is both benevolent and a source of fierce energy. Somnath embodies a transformative, life-giving force beyond mere material conquest.”
He also lamented historical narratives that have whitewashed the brutal reality of invasions, reducing centuries of hatred, oppression, and terror to mere economic plunder.
“If the attacks had been only for material loot, they would have stopped after the first raid a thousand years ago. But the sacred deities were deliberately targeted. History should acknowledge this reality.”
A Message to the World
Through his remarks at Somnath, PM Modi sent a resolute message to nations from Pakistan to Turkey, the US to China: India’s heritage, faith, and sovereignty remain unshaken. The thousand-year-old story of Somnath stands as a symbol of India’s enduring spirit, strategic assertiveness, and civilizational strength—a lesson for both friends and adversaries in the contemporary global order.
