Patna: Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, the Janata Dal (United) MP from Munger and a senior Union Minister, is celebrating his birthday today amid an outpouring of greetings from top political leaders across the country. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, prominent figures have lauded Lalan Singh’s political journey and contributions.
Often described as the “Chanakya” of Bihar politics, Lalan Singh is widely regarded as Nitish Kumar’s most trusted troubleshooter—a leader who prefers operating behind the scenes but plays a decisive role in shaping power equations in the state. His strategic acumen, organisational grip, and decades-long association with Nitish Kumar have earned him a reputation as one of the most influential power brokers in Bihar.
Greetings from the Top Leadership
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a message posted on social media platform X, wrote:
“Warm birthday greetings to Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh ji. He is contributing to strengthening our Panchayati Raj system, which gives voice to countless people. His efforts to further develop the animal husbandry, fisheries, and dairy sectors are commendable. I wish him a long and healthy life.”
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also extended his wishes, saying:
“Heartfelt birthday greetings and best wishes to Hon’ble Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh ji. I pray for your good health and a long life.”
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described him as a popular leader and prayed for his continued success in nation-building.
A Political Journey Rooted in the JP Movement
Born on January 24, 1955, in Patna, Lalan Singh belongs to the Bhumihar community. His political awakening began during his student days, when he actively participated in the 1974 JP Movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan. It was during this period that he forged a close bond with Nitish Kumar—a relationship that would go on to shape Bihar’s political trajectory for decades.
Lalan Singh was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Munger in 2004. Over the years, he has served as a Rajya Sabha MP, held key portfolios such as Water Resources Minister in the Bihar government, and later rose to become the national president of the JD(U). His rise within the party underscores his organisational skills and his importance in alliance management.
Nitish Kumar’s ‘Crisis Manager’—With Controversies
Lalan Singh is often referred to as Nitish Kumar’s “sankatmochak” (crisis manager). From the formation of the NDA government in Bihar in 2005 to the dramatic political realignments leading to the Mahagathbandhan in 2022, his role has been pivotal in nearly every major political decision.
He is also credited with pushing key development projects in Munger, including the rail-cum-road bridge over the Ganga. However, his career has not been without controversies. Known for his blunt and sometimes abrasive statements, Lalan Singh has frequently launched sharp attacks on Prime Minister Modi and the central government, stirring political debate.
Around 2010, his relationship with Nitish Kumar hit a rough patch, during which he openly rebelled and even referred to the Chief Minister as “authoritarian.” The rift, however, was later mended, and Lalan Singh returned as one of Nitish Kumar’s closest confidants.
Speculation intensified in 2023, when he resigned as JD(U) national president, with media reports suggesting growing proximity to RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav and alleged plans of a party split. Lalan Singh strongly denied these claims.
A Lasting Influence in Bihar Politics
Despite political ups and downs, internal power struggles, and recurring controversies, Lalan Singh remains one of the few leaders in Bihar capable of shaping governments from behind the curtain. His influence within the JD(U) and his strong hold over Munger continue to make him a formidable force in state and national politics.
As birthday wishes pour in from across party lines, Lalan Singh’s journey stands as a testament to the enduring power of strategy, loyalty, and political instinct in Bihar’s ever-shifting political landscape.
