Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, the Congress party has suffered a major setback. Former state president Bhupen Bora has resigned from the party, prompting a sharp reaction from the BJP. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked that Congress has lost its last Hindu leader.
Bora Submits Resignation to Gaurav Gogoi
Bora sent his resignation to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Monday at 8 AM. In his resignation, he explained the reasons that compelled him to take this stand, clarifying that it was not a personal decision. Bora has been associated with Congress for 32 years, having joined the party in 1994.
Responding to the news, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Bhupen Bora was the last prominent Hindu leader in Assam Congress who had never held a ministerial or legislative post.
Sarma Criticizes Congress for Nepotism and Appeasement Politics
The CM further stated that Bora’s resignation sends a symbolic message: in Congress, a person from an ordinary family cannot rise within the party. He accused Congress of practicing appeasement politics and pointed out that party meetings in district offices often begin with religious prayers of a particular community.
Sarma clarified that Bora has not contacted the BJP to join yet, but he intends to meet him to discuss his future plans. He added that three years ago, the BJP was ready to welcome Bora and even provide him a safe seat.
Predictions of Further Resignations
Speaking on the potential shift of leaders, Sarma predicted that several more leaders, including four to five MLAs, are likely to resign from Congress. He noted that many Hindu Congress leaders at the grassroots level are joining the BJP following allegations regarding Gaurav Gogoi’s Pakistan connections. BJP MLA Biswajit Phukan alleged that Gaurav Gogoi’s wife has direct links with Pakistan, and claimed that Congress has now effectively become a party controlled by one community, with leaders like Rakeebul Hasan soon taking over.
