Kolkata: Former West Bengal legislator Humayun Kabir, recently expelled from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has made a sensational claim, stating that a ₹2 crore contract had been issued to eliminate him. Kabir, who has been in the news for announcing the construction of a Babri Masjid in Bengal, said the threat to his life comes in the backdrop of his political fallout with the TMC.
After being expelled from the TMC, Kabir founded his own political outfit, the Janta Unnayan Party (JUP), and has since positioned himself as a kingmaker in the run-up to the state assembly elections. He recently approached BJP, Congress, and left parties with a proposal for a potential alliance.
Kabir alleged that a hitman was appointed under the supervision of the local Superintendent of Police to target him. He made these statements following an incident in Berhampur, where trucks under his convoy were allegedly stopped on the highway.
Despite threats, Kabir has laid the foundation stone for the Babri Masjid in Beldanga, Murshidabad district. The mosque is planned on an 11 bigha plot, with lakhs of bricks, sand, and steel rods already accumulated at the site. Kabir estimates that the construction will take approximately two years.
The TMC had expelled Kabir on December 6, 2025, following the foundation-laying ceremony. Kabir, 63, who once served as a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, has in the past made highly controversial statements, including threatening remarks against the Hindu community in 2024.
Kabir’s announcement has stirred political tensions in West Bengal, with leaders like Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath asserting that such a mosque construction would be “impossible until doomsday.” The development is expected to become a focal point in the upcoming state elections, potentially polarizing voters.
