‘Every Mafia Linked to SP’: CM Yogi Attacks Opposition Over Codeine Cough Syrup Case

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has openly spoken about the ongoing Codeine cough syrup smuggling case, delivering a sharp attack on the opposition. For the first time, CM Yogi linked the criminal networks involved in the illicit trade to the Samajwadi Party (SP), offering a new angle in the controversy that has dominated political discourse.

Addressing the media ahead of the winter session of the UP Assembly, CM Yogi, accompanied by Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, emphasized that the state government has taken stringent action under the NDPS Act. “Police have carried out large-scale arrests. It is no secret that every active mafia in the state has connections with the Samajwadi Party,” CM Yogi said.

SP Links and Investigation Updates
The Chief Minister claimed that those arrested by the STF in the case have ties to the SP, and further names connected to the party are expected to surface as the investigation progresses. CM Yogi alleged that even financial transactions related to the illegal trade reveal connections to the SP leadership. “Once the investigation concludes, truth will come to light,” he asserted.

Strict Enforcement Under NDPS Act
CM Yogi clarified that Codeine is classified under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, intended for treating severe coughs. Its distribution and quota are regulated by the Central Narcotics Bureau. Following complaints about its misuse as a recreational drug, the FSDA brought the substance under NDPS control, and coordinated action with the police and STF has led to multiple arrests and seizure of smuggled consignments.

Winter Session of UP Assembly Begins
CM Yogi also informed that the UP Assembly’s winter session begins today and will continue until 24 December. He described the session as critical for discussing public issues, development initiatives, and legislation impacting citizens. While the first day will observe condolence motions, he assured that the government will respond to all queries, including the Codeine cough syrup issue, when raised in the House.

“The government will not tolerate illegal drug trafficking under any circumstances,” CM Yogi emphasized.
