Indore, November 24, 2025: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh on Sunday lauded New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his fearless criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump, while sharply attacking India’s Election Commission and raising concerns over the ongoing SIR (Systematic Identification Revision) process.
Speaking to the media in Indore, Singh praised Mamdani for having the courage to call President Trump a “fascist” to his face. “He is just a mayor, yet he spoke openly. In our country, people holding big positions fear speaking the truth due to pressure from those in power,” he said.
Accuses Election Commission of Dishonesty
Digvijay Singh launched a direct attack on the Election Commission, alleging that the institution has “completely fallen into dishonesty.” He said that under the SIR process, names of genuine voters are being removed from electoral rolls.
“Today, the right to vote is being taken away. Tomorrow, even citizenship will be taken away,” Singh warned.
He further claimed that the Modi government is trying to shield the Election Commission. Referring to the list of 272 retired officials who have supported the Commission, he alleged that many of them have past links with the BJP and RSS and that some even face serious corruption charges.
Questions Raised Over SIR Across States
Singh said the SIR process is being misused to purge voter lists. “This is a deliberate attempt to silence democratic rights,” he added, promising a special discussion on Constitutional protection on November 26.
Praises Mayor Mamdani’s Courage
The Congress leader reiterated his admiration for New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, saying, “Mamdani openly called President Trump a fascist, while many in India hesitate to speak even when holding top positions. This is the difference bold leadership can make.”
Indore Visit Amid Local Congress Turmoil
Digvijay Singh reached Indore on Sunday at a time when the city Congress is embroiled in an audio leak controversy. Notably, city Congress president Chintu Choukse accompanied Singh throughout his visit, including at a wedding event at Hotel Infinity.
When reporters sought Singh’s reaction to the audio leak, he smiled and pointed towards Choukse, saying, “Chintu is right here—ask him.” Both leaders shared a light moment as cameras rolled.
