Bhopal: Four days after IAS officer Santosh Varma made a highly controversial remark about Brahmin daughters, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla has finally spoken out. Shukla described the comment as a reflection of Varma’s “distorted mindset,” calling it offensive and socially divisive.
Comment Sparks Outrage
The remark, in which Varma allegedly suggested that Brahmin daughters are “for donation,” has triggered widespread protests across the state. Speaking on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Deputy CM Shukla stated: “Any comment against sisters or daughters by a senior IAS officer is extremely objectionable, insensitive, and fosters unnecessary division in society. Such statements reflect a distorted mindset and undermine both social harmony and administrative dignity.”
Shukla further emphasized that remarks targeting women or specific communities go against Indian cultural values and traditions, and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. He highlighted that responsible officers must maintain respect for all sections of society, and any deviation is unacceptable.
Government Takes Action
The Deputy CM confirmed that IAS Varma has been served a government notice seeking clarification regarding his statement. Shukla added that if the response is unsatisfactory, appropriate action will be taken against the officer.
Public Protests Intensify
The controversial statement has also led to massive public protests, particularly from the Brahmin community and other social organizations. Demonstrators have staged rallies from Roshanpura Chowk to TT Nagar, symbolically burning Varma’s effigy, adorning it with shoes, and marching with slogans demanding stricter action. More than two dozen organizations, including the Hindu Utsav Committee, have joined the protests.
The protesters are calling for IAS Varma’s suspension and the filing of an FIR against him, arguing that the government-issued notice alone is insufficient. Until their demands are met, demonstrations are expected to continue.
