New Delhi: A Delhi court has issued a notice to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi in a voter list controversy, amid allegations that she enrolled as a voter before acquiring Indian citizenship.
The matter came up at the Rouse Avenue Sessions Court, where a petition challenged a magistrate court order that had earlier dismissed the demand for registering an FIR against the senior Congress leader. The petition alleges that Sonia Gandhi’s name was included in the electoral roll in 1980, prior to officially obtaining Indian citizenship.
The petition was filed by Advocate Vikas Tripathi, who also serves as the Vice President of the Rouse Avenue Court Bar Association.
Court Seeks Response from Police and Sonia Gandhi
The Rouse Avenue Sessions Court has now sought responses from Sonia Gandhi and the Delhi Police regarding the matter. The next hearing has been scheduled for January 6, 2026. Advocate Tripathi’s petition challenges the previous magistrate court order that had outrightly refused to register an FIR.
Alleged Voter Enrollment Before Citizenship
The controversy centers on claims that Sonia Gandhi’s name appeared on the 1980 electoral roll, despite her being officially granted Indian citizenship only on April 30, 1983. The petition also states that her name was removed from the voter list in 1982.
The petitioner has questioned which documents were submitted for her voter enrollment in 1980 and whether any false or fraudulent papers were used. The earlier petition had been dismissed by the magistrate court in September 2025. The current revision petition challenges that dismissal, prompting the court to issue the notice.
