Controversy Erupts Over Ban on Non-Hindus at Gangotri; Arshad Madni and Imran Masood Raise Concerns

Saharanpur, Uttarakhand: The state government of Uttarakhand has imposed a complete ban on the entry of non-Hindus at Gangotri Dham, and similar measures are reportedly being considered for Badrinath and Kedarnath. The decision has sparked widespread debate and criticism from political and religious leaders.

Religious Leader Voices Strong Opposition
Arshad Madni, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, strongly criticized the move, calling it unconstitutional. He remarked, “They think the country belongs to them and that they can guide the people in any direction, but times have changed. It is good that people live with love and brotherhood, which is what Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind teaches. This issue is not limited to Kedarnath alone. In Assam, entire colonies are being demolished and millions of Muslims are being labeled as foreigners.”

Government Questioned by Lawmakers
Congress MP Imran Masood from Saharanpur also voiced concerns over the policy, saying it has created a confusing and troubling situation. “If you are a citizen of the country, prove your citizenship. Will the government verify it? Now they have even begun questioning Hindus — asking whether they are Hindu or not. How can anyone prove their religion?”

The controversy highlights growing debates over religious access to sacred sites and the constitutional rights of citizens, raising questions about the implementation of such bans in a secular country.
