Congress Questions Modi Government’s Silence on Growing US-Pakistan Ties

The Congress Party has once again raised concerns over the central government’s silence regarding the strengthening ties between the United States and Pakistan, particularly focusing on the repeated praise of Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir by former US President Donald Trump.

Growing US-Pakistan Friendship Sparks Concern

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that the increasing closeness between the US and Pakistan is a matter of national concern for India, yet the Modi government has remained conspicuously silent. According to Ramesh, after the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, Pakistan faced global condemnation and was widely discredited. Today, however, the US-Pakistan friendship appears to be rehabilitating Pakistan’s international image.

Trump’s Repeated Praise for Munir

Ramesh highlighted that President Trump has repeatedly lauded Field Marshal Munir over the past few months, claiming he prevented a military clash between India and Pakistan in May 2025. India, however, clarified that any pause in military operations was due to communication initiated by the Directorate General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan, not unilateral action by Munir.

According to Ramesh:

  • On 18 June 2025, Trump hosted Munir at the White House for a luncheon.
  • On 1 October 2025, Munir met Trump again at the White House, presenting a rare metals box as a gift.
  • On 13 October 2025 in Egypt, Trump called Munir his “favorite Field Marshal”.
  • On 29 October 2025, Trump praised Munir as a great military leader.
  • On 22 December 2025, Trump once more lauded Munir, calling him a highly honored general.

Ramesh criticized these gestures, asserting that the US is effectively giving Munir a clean chit, despite evidence suggesting his involvement in the 22 April 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

Call for Government Accountability

The Congress leader emphasized that such developments pose serious national security concerns. He remarked that unlike in 2008, when Pakistan was globally exposed and criticized after the Mumbai attacks, the current international dynamics seem to celebrate and reward Pakistani military leadership, a trend India cannot ignore.

Ramesh concluded that the Modi government must publicly address this situation and clarify its stance on US-Pakistan relations and their implications for India’s security.
