Congress MPs Allegedly Misbehave with Lok Sabha Speaker; Kiren Rijiju Levels Serious Charges

New Delhi: Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju has alleged that several Congress MPs verbally abused Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla inside his chamber. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday within the Parliament premises, Rijiju claimed that he personally witnessed the incident.

Misconduct Alleged Against Speaker
Rijiju stated, “At least 20–25 Congress MPs entered the Speaker’s chamber and misbehaved with him. I was present there as well. The Speaker is a very gentle person; otherwise, strict action would have been taken. Senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal, were also present inside and reportedly encouraged the MPs to confront him.”

No-Confidence Motion Against Birla
The minister’s statement comes amid the opposition submitting a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The notice was handed over to the Lok Sabha Secretary on Tuesday. The opposition alleges that Birla conducted House proceedings in a biased manner, made false accusations against Congress members, and misused his office.

Speaker Steps Aside Temporarily
Sources from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that following the submission of the notice, Speaker Birla decided not to preside over the House until the matter is resolved. He instructed Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh to examine the notice and take appropriate action according to parliamentary rules.

Support for the Motion
The notice for the no-confidence motion was submitted by Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, Chief Whip Kodikunnil Suresh, and Whip Mohammad Javed to the Lok Sabha Secretary. Over 120 MPs from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, and other opposition parties signed the notice. MPs from the Trinamool Congress, however, did not sign. The motion was submitted under Article 94(c) of the Constitution.
