Congress Launches 45-Day “Save MNREGA” Campaign Against ‘VBGJ’ Scheme in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Rajasthan: The Rajasthan Congress has announced a statewide protest against changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which the party claims undermine the right to work for rural citizens. The party plans to launch the “MNREGA Bachao Sangram” campaign starting January 10, spanning 45 days, to mobilize public opinion against the government’s proposed ‘VBGJ’ scheme.

Congress Criticizes Government’s Move

Rajasthan Congress Committee President Govind Singh Dotasra said that MGNREGA traditionally guaranteed employment to rural and marginalized communities. “The changes introduced by the central government effectively erase the Right to Work, despite claims of providing 125 days of employment. In reality, over the past two years, rural workers haven’t even received 100 days of guaranteed work. Securing even 30–35 days of employment is now difficult,” he asserted.

Statewide Awareness Drive

Congress spokesperson R.C. Chaudhary outlined the plan for the campaign. On January 10, press conferences will be held across all districts highlighting the potential harm of the new law. On January 11, Congress leaders and members will observe a fast, followed by door-to-door outreach starting January 12, educating villagers about their rights under MNREGA. The campaign will culminate in a state-level public rally after 45 days.

Leaders Assigned Responsibilities

All Congress office-bearers, including current and former MPs, MLAs, ministers, and organizational leaders, have been assigned roles at the district, block, ward, and booth levels to ensure participation and accountability in the movement. Dotasra emphasized, “Saving MNREGA will be a significant service to the people and a noble cause.”

Payment Delays and State Burden

Dotasra further criticized the central government for delaying payments under MNREGA, with nearly ₹5,000 crore still pending. He added that the new law shifts 40% of financial burden onto the states, which he described as a deliberate attempt to weaken state governments.
