Congress Criticizes Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Over Amartya Sen Citizenship Notice

The Congress party has targeted Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the issuance of a notice to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen regarding proof of his citizenship. The party claimed that Kumar compromised the credibility of the Election Commission to appease Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a post on X, Congress stated: “Understand the SIR (Special Intensive Review) irregularity. The Election Commission sent a notice to Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to prove his citizenship. Gyanesh Kumar has undermined the credibility of the Election Commission just to please his master Modi.”

The party described the notice sent to Amartya Sen as “distressing” and demanded an apology from both the Election Commission and the Prime Minister.

The controversy began when Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee claimed on Tuesday that the Election Commission had issued a notice to Sen for a Special Intensive Review (SIR) hearing. However, an official from the Election Commission clarified that the confusion arose solely from a technical issue in spelling and does not affect the voter’s eligibility. The official added that officers have been instructed to resolve such matters administratively to avoid unnecessary disputes.
