Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath displayed a rare moment of camaraderie with Minister Dinesh Khatik during an inspection of the Major Dhyan Chand Sports University construction in Meerut on Thursday. Known for his strict demeanor, CM Yogi also ensures that his colleagues receive proper respect, a gesture witnessed by local residents.
During the inspection, Minister Khatik initially fell behind, with former MLA Sangeet Som walking ahead. Noticing this, CM Yogi reportedly signaled Som, saying, “Let the minister come forward.” Following the instruction, Minister Khatik moved alongside the CM, and both continued the inspection together, with Som standing nearby. This gesture has since sparked discussions on social media and has been interpreted by political observers as a message regarding Khatik’s position within the party.
Background on Dinesh Khatik: Khatik recently attracted attention for comments linking Hastinapur to Draupadi’s curse, which stirred debate. He had also stated he would not contest elections from there for the third time. Despite the controversy, CM Yogi’s public display of closeness with Khatik sent a strong signal to political circles.
Construction Deadline Set: During the inspection, CM Yogi set the deadline for completing the sports university. He directed that the first phase of construction should be finished by March, with the entire project—including both phases—completed by 31 May 2026. The government has allocated ₹250 crore for the first phase and over ₹200 crore for the second phase.
The new university, currently operating from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Agricultural University, will shift to its 100-acre campus for the next academic session. Originally, construction was planned on 90 acres, but the scope has now been expanded. CM Yogi emphasized that the new campus should be ready to start courses in the upcoming session.
