CBI Arrests Deputy Chief Engineer of East Central Railway in ₹98 Lakh Bribery Case

Hazipur, Bihar – In a major crackdown on corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Deputy Chief Engineer of the Construction Department of East Central Railway (ECR), along with three others, for allegedly accepting bribes in exchange for providing undue benefits to private contractors.

During extensive searches, CBI seized over ₹98.81 lakh in cash from various envelopes and packets marked with names and identifiers, indicating payments made by different individuals.

Caught Red-Handed While Taking Bribe

According to CBI, the Deputy Chief Engineer and Office Superintendent were caught red-handed on 17 November while accepting bribe money. The officials allegedly allowed the use of substandard construction materials in railway projects and facilitated irregularities to benefit contractors, causing substantial financial losses to the government.

Following the arrests, CBI also detained the other two accused—a project manager and an employee of a private company, M/s JPW Infratech—for questioning, after which they were formally arrested.

Searches Conducted Across Four States

CBI has carried out searches at 11 locations across Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal. Officials confirmed that further raids and investigations are underway, and more arrests are likely as the probe progresses.

Investigation Based on Informer Tip-Off

The investigation began after a reliable informer alerted the agency to ongoing corruption within the construction department. The probe revealed that bribes were routinely taken to overlook poor-quality materials and irregularities in railway works.

All arrested accused were produced before the court, which granted CBI custody for further interrogation.
